How you can help during COVID-19

By April 8, 2020Appeal, News

Your support to the hospital, our patients and our staff is invaluable and during these challenging times, despite being tested in so many ways, our community always comes together and offers its help and support.

A central hub has opened at Warrington Hospital to support the community in donating food, toiletries and other comforts to patients and staff during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Located in a portacabin at Kendrick wing, but external to the main hospital, the Community Hub is open 8-4pm Mon-Fri for drop offs of a wide range of items.

From today local people living in WA postcode areas will be able to contact the WHH Charity Hotline to arrange a morning or evening collection by Hospital teams.  To observe social distancing guidance the teams will collect from doorsteps/gardens by arrangement with the householder.

There are so many ways that you can help and our patients and staff need you now more than ever. As a charity we are geared up for helping and supporting our most needy and we want to use this to spread the word about how people can come together and support us in what is a really difficult time for lots of people in our hospitals and our community.

How can you help?

The hub is providing a basic ‘starter-pack’ for patients being discharged home.

Care Packages – Dry goods, store cupboard items, toiletries

Items in biggest demand are:

  • Non-perishable foods including tea, coffee, dried milk, sugar, biscuits, long-life milk, tins of soups, beans etc. and toiletries including shower gels, shampoos, hand and body creams, toothpaste and antiperspirants.

Please email us at WHH.Charity@nhs.net or call 01925 662 666 to arrange a collection giving us your home address and a contact number should we require it. Then if you can leave the donation in a shopping bag or a box at the end of your path, we will arrange collection either in the morning or at the end of the day. Please make sure that these are not too heavy and easy to pick up – separating large items if needed.

Boredom Busters

Having suspended visiting across almost all wards in response to national guidance, the hospital is appealing for items to support patients through the long days without visitors.  Many of our patients on the wards are finding that the days are very long and drawn out.

  • Games, magazines, jigsaws (complete sets), puzzle books, writing paper, pens and envelopes, adult colouring books and coloured pencils.

If you have any games that you would like to donate, please ensure they are full sets with no pieces missing and in good condition.

To arrange a collection please get in touch and let us know and we will do our best to collect them. Please get in touch in the same way by emailing us at WHH.Charity@nhs.net or calling 01925 662 666.

Staff Support

The Hub is putting together overnight packs to staff that are forced to stay away from home due to family members self-isolating.

Staff are staying in accommodation provided by the hospital so that we can ensure their own health and wellbeing and a proximity to work. With these staff in mind we are also asking for donations of toiletries and personal care items so that they have things with them if they are unable to get items in supermarkets due to time pressures or availability. These can be donated and collected by our teams in the same way.

Businesses we need you!

We know how challenging it has been for local businesses over recent weeks and that difficult times lie ahead for many. If you have any surplus stock or items that may be wasted then please get in touch.

Food items, toiletries, flowers, garden items can always be found a good home on one of our sites. Please contact one of the team on 01925 662 666.

Teddy Bears for bereaved children

We are also able to accept donations of teddies that will be given to bereaved children. These can be donated to the Community Hub or collected by arrangement.

Community Hub Opening Times

The new Community Hub will accept donations 6 days a week if you are happy to drop items off. All contact will be minimised and we are easy to find.  We are located in a portacabin at Kendrick wing, but external to the main hospital, the Community Hub is open 8-4pm Mon-Fri for drop offs of a wide range of items and Saturday morning 9am-2pm.
