From farm to finish line: Paul’s 5K challenge for WHH Charity

Thursday 3 September 2025

A volunteer at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals (WHH) is preparing to swap his farm boots for running shoes this September, as Paul James takes on the Warrington Running Festival in aid of WHH Charity.

Paul, who recently stepped down after two years as a wayfinder at Warrington Hospital, has long been a supporter of the charity – donating hundreds of Crème Eggs every Easter to brighten the stay of patients in hospital. Now he is taking on a new challenge; running the 5K route through Warrington town centre.

The idea began as a light-hearted dare from his eldest son, who doubted Paul could manage the distance.

Determined to prove him wrong, Paul began training with the popular ‘Couch to 5K’ app and has gradually built up his stamina. On the day, he will be joined by both his sons – making the run a family effort as well as a fundraising mission.

Supporting WHH Charity is a natural step for Paul, whose time as a volunteer gave him first-hand experience of the difference it makes for patients, families and staff.

“Every penny donated to WHH Charity stays within the hospitals, helping to improve facilities and care,” Paul said. “That’s what motivates me to take part.”

Away from the hospital, Paul runs Poplars Farm Eggs in Antrobus, Northwich – a family business that has supplied free-range eggs across the North West for more than 30 years. Having built a successful business with his wife, he says giving back to the community has always been important to them both.

Paul has already received strong encouragement from friends, family and former colleagues, and hopes his efforts will inspire others to support WHH Charity.

Every penny raised will go directly to enhancing care for local people. You can support Paul’s challenge by visiting his fundraising page.
