A peaceful memorial garden in the heart of Warrington Hospital’s Radiology Department has officially opened, providing a tranquil space for staff to reflect and recharge.

The Radiology Memorial Garden, which was opened on Thursday 22 May 2025, honours the memory of much-loved colleagues Janet Guy and Trevor Wain, both of whom sadly died after many years of dedicated service at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals.

Janet worked at the Trust for over 40 years and often spoke of the potential to transform the courtyard she overlooked from her office. Following her death in 2021 and the sudden death of Trevor in January 2022, the idea of creating a memorial garden began to take shape.

Staff from the Radiology Team quickly raised the first £1,000 before approaching Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals Charity to help bring the vision to life. With the launch of the Radiology Memorial Garden Appeal in 2022, a wave of support from the local community followed.

Thanks to a fundraising abseil in 2023 and incredible backing from local charity corporate partners, college students, and volunteers, the project raised more than £5,000 and gained vital donations of time, materials and expertise.

The once bare courtyard has now been transformed with paved walkways, corner arbours, benches, planters and artwork created by students at Warrington and Vale Royal College. Many of the plants have been chosen for their significance, including ‘Janet’ tulips, ‘Trevor’ thistles, a ‘Maria’ shrub and ‘Carol’ geraniums – personal touches that honour each person remembered in the space.

The families of those commemorated were present at the opening ceremony, which marked a touching moment of reflection and appreciation for the lives and contributions of their loved ones.

Irene Crowder, Quality for Imaging Standards Administrator, said: “The garden is a beautiful tribute to those we’ve lost and a lasting reminder of how much they meant to us. It has brought people together in such a positive way and is already making a difference to staff wellbeing. We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make it a reality.”

The project could not have been completed without the dedicated support of the Radiology and Estates Departments, Trust gardening volunteers and the wider local community.
